JULY, 2006
Hello from my new home in Highland. During 2005 I gave a great deal of thought to selling and moving. In December I found exactly what I wanted. I brought an 1800 sq. ft. 1978 mobilehome into the 21st century. I sold my townhouse in Loma Linda in April and moved about the same time. It's really great to have everything on one floor!
Also, I want to share with you the pride I felt when my son, Bill, age 45 graduated from Redlands University with a BS in Business and Management while working full time (nights) with the City of Colton PD. His sons, Joseph, age 21 and Joshua, age 19, both enlisted in the Army. Joe will have graduated from boot camp (July 7) by the time you receive this newsletter. Bill, Joe's wife April, and son Tyler, age 1 are going to South Carolina for his event and then in August, Bill, and Joshua's girlfriend are going to Ft. Benning, GA for his graduation. Bill had served in the Army following his high school graduation so it's very important to him that he be with his sons.
.....................It is always sad to have to send condolences to our classmates/families-
RICHARD LELAND DAVIS of Juneau, Alaska passed away from cancer May, 2006.
ROGER HILE died April 9, 2006 of Alzheimer's from which we had suffered since 2000.
SHIRLEY (MCGAFFIC) FERGUSON FORTUNA died January 26, 2006, as the result of being hit by a truck. (This was such so unexpected and so tragic!)
To our Classmate, CHRIS (ANDRADE) VELARDE - our sympathy on the loss of her husband, Roy, who passed away May 24, 2006 from congestive heart failure, and to
ENID (ELAM) PUGH on the loss of her husband who passed away Dec. 4, 2005.
LONNIE HELT POWERS and husband Jim had a very scary 4 months at the end of 2005. Jim went in for his second surgery on Oct. 24, 2005 after discovering that his kidneys were shutting down, but he made it through the surgery. A few days later Lonnie emailed me the good news. Jim was taking water, broth and jello. He was later moved from ICU to a regular room. This short synopsis in no way diminishes the nightmarish weeks Jim and Lonnie went through, being told he wasn't going to make it, to his going to be just fine. We are so glad to report Jim is well that I didn't think we need to dwell on the negative. GOOD HEALTH TO YOU, JIM!
GAIL (MOORE) ROSER and Wayne had a scare last November, when Gail found herself facing surgery for an 80% occluded carotid artery. The surgery carried risk, but no surgery carried a much heavier risk. She had the surgery on Nov. 28 and the artery wall had already started to rupture. Thanks to a great Dr. and an excellent surgeon, they were able to spend Christmas in Hawaii!!!! She had no symptoms except high blood pressure that refused to go down. Gail suggests we all pay attention to our bodies and their little wake up calls!
RAY GRANT and his wife, Irma, took a trip to visit her family in Germany this past September and it gave Ray the opportunity to meet her Mother for the first time. They traveled into Budapest and the surrounding areas. What a great trip it must have been! Ray, you need to give me an email tour so we can share it with everyone next year.
MAXINE TAPPAN BELL and hubby, Dwight, report that they had a wonderful trip to Costa Rica at the end of 2005. The weather was great up in the Rain Forest and the area around it. It was, however, very hot and humid on the coasts of the Atlantic and Pacific. They saw monkeys, iguanas, sloths, egrets and herons, toucans and macaws. They even visited a coffee growing area, a volcano crater, cruised on various canals in the jungle and so much more.
I'm sorry to have to bring this to everyone's attention, but........our 55th reunion is less than 2-1/2 years away - therefore, it is time to start thinking about where to have it and what type of reunion do we want. Suggestions - Hilton Hotel, Arrowhead Country Club, Elks Club for Saturday night dinner. Friday night get together somewhere and Sunday morning brunch somewhere. Do you want the same type of reunion as we have had in the past or do you want a very low key reunion?
Also, a reminder to those of you who have not paid or have partially paid your dues, please do so as soon as possible. It is $10 per year. If you need to check the amount you've already paid call me or email me. The dues should be made payable to SBHS Class of '53 and mailed to Tom Chapman, 1222 Sunnyside Dr., Redlands, CA 92373.
Our Class Picnic will be held, October 21, 2006 at Sylvan Park, Redlands, CA. Directions are: Eastbond (I10) to University, turn left to Park Ave. then left to Division). Westbound (I10) to Cypress, continue across and turn left to University, turn right. At Park Ave. turn left to area with all the tables. The same area as the years before. Note: We will provide a form for you to fill out giving us your wishes for the 55th Reunion.
FOUND - GENE FLORES- Student of Salvador Dali -Dick Howell gave me information on him that indicates he is alive and well and living in Maryland. He is a "world class metal sculptor - tops in the U.S. His wife, Susan, is a recognized expert furniture designer. A search on GOOGLE.COM under "Gene Flores" will bring up several interesting websites on Gene and his wife. Dick added some history to those many years ago, and I quote "He(Gene) and his brother (older) Jimmy lived with their parents near the corner of Baseline St. and Perris St. - on the southeast corner on Perris St. just above Baseline. (on the right hand side - in a white Spanish style home). Almost across from him to the west on Perris St. above Baseline lived Shirley Matthews, her older brother, Gene, her mother and father Ralph, who was my friend in later years). In those days I lived with my parents and baby sister on 13th St. clode to "I" St. next to the Charles C. Adams Lumber Company. Ronald Ossa lived with his parents behind his father's music store on the south side of Baseline St. between "H" and "I" Sts. Leland Leonhardt (deceased) also lived on Baseline St. on the south side between Perris and Massachusetts Sts. Behind his parents Sporting Goods Store. Such are my memories." These are but only one classmates' memories. I bet everyone of us can remember everything about where we lived, what we did, who were our neighbors, our grammar school, etc.
I thought we would take a walk down memory lane......excerpts in part from an email from Dick Howell-
Do you remember Nehi, Nesbit, Bireley's and Squirt soft drinks....Douglas, Flying "A" and Gilmore gasolines...gasoline powered heaters in the automobiles...pre-1939 Fords with mechanical brakes...the Hollywood Stars baseball team...Helms Bakery Sedan Delivery Trucks and their whistles...the Pacific Electric street cars in San Bernardino that ran all the way to Los Angeles...police cars with mechanical sirens mounted on the left front fender...Harry's Roller Rink in San Bernardino...the Urbita Balroom in San Bernardino...Club Oaks Restaurant and Lounge at the foot of Waterman Canyon...the Pacific Electric line that ran up to Arrowhead Springs (locomotives pulling tanker cars used to bring Arrowhead Spring Water down from Arrowhead Springs and then on to Los Angeles for processing)...when Orange Show Speedway in San Bernardino used to be Orange Show Stadium with a grassy infield enclosed by a quarter-mile dirt tract (SBHS played their football games there" (and we graduated there!)"...the Fox, West Coast, Ritz, Studio, Temple and Azteca theaters...the Baseline Drive-in, the Tri-City Drive-in and the one on Mt. Vernon (forgot its name)...the Antlers Hotel, the St. Augustine Hotel, the California Hotel and right after December 7, 1941, all of Mill St. down to about Central Ave. between "E" St. and Waterman Ave. was closed off with a chain link fence to temporarily house the Japanese until they could permanently be relocated to official internment camps.

The famous Olympic skier Picabo Street (pronounced Peek-A-Boo) is not just an athlete...she is now a nurse currently working at the Intensive Care Unit of a large metropolitan hospital. She is not permitted to answer the hospital telephones. It caused too much confusion when she would answer the phone and say....
Picabo, ICU
(A good clean joke is hard to find these days...)
I hope all of you are having a gret summer, stay cool, stay healthy and we'll see you at the picnic in October.
